A Ghost Town Adventure
Of all the towns we’ve visited in North Dakota, Manfred is one of the best. It’s a small near-ghost town in central North Dakota, just off highway 52 between Minot and Jamestown.
We visited in 2006 and got photos of numerous structures including some homes and the Johnson hotel. There was also an impressive school building, but we did not take photos because it looked like someone was using it as a home.
In the years since, the residents of Manfred have done an incredible job of restoring many of the structures. On May 7th, Pam Norstedt and her crew in Manfred will be attempting to clean out the school — the first step toward getting the building into shape. And they need volunteers! They’ll be working at full-steam by 9am and there will be a noon potluck.
Pam told us she’s been told she may be taking on “too ambitious a project.” Let’s help out and make sure that’s not true. If you’d like to go on a real ghost town adventure and pitch in, please email Pam Norstedt at pnorstedt@yahoo.com and tell her how many people you’ll be bringing. They are looking for 20 to 30 volunteers. The Ghosts of North Dakota crew will be attending and helping out too.
More details coming soon.

Manfred was my grandmother’s hometown. There’s a lot of pride in former residents.
we would love to help. and potluck is always fun. were from Harvey.
I live in Harvey and would love to help.
That hotel is very similar to a now-demolished structure that I remember in Mohall when I was growing up there (it was due south of Zion Lutheran and just west of the city park).
If you guys could email Pam at pnorstedt@yahoo.com to let her know you’ll be helping, that would be great.
I love that the residents of Manfred have been working on preserving the town. I’ve always been struck by the unique octagonal bell tower of the church as I drive on Hwy 52 to go “home” to visit my parents on their farm. I would love to visit the museum but am always driving by at the wrong time. It seems though, that in the repainting of the old hotel building, that the old “Hotel” painted on the building was painted over, which I thought was too bad. But everyone’s a critic. Wish I had the funds to fix-up my old hometown!
Hi everyone, want a creep? See SAN HAVEN. My mother went there for a field trip in college, something with psychics, she saw people walking around with white ol’ diapers, babies with huge heads, you HAD to turn them, or the would be injured terribly. She hated it, two headed kids… She was scarred for life, the building was GREAT before, but when everyone dumped unwanted disabled children there, it all turned UPSIDE DOWN. Please check it out when you would like.
